Brief To develop an application to allow users to read data from a budget spreadsheet and post it to the Dream financial package
Description We developed an application which allowed a user to download an existing budget to Excel or to create an empty spreadsheet with columns for periods and rows for nominal codes. After entering the budgets into this grid a separate screen posts each cell's data to Dream.

Details We developed this application for the Dream User Group, which we help administer. The application comprised a shell with the menus in it and a screen which is shared with other apps and delivered in a separate .NET DLL project. The screen has two tabs:
  1. Download tab:
    • Users can download an existing budget for a previous year (or the current year budget).
    • Alternatively an empty spreadsheet can be created.
    • Nominals without attached ledgers are downloaded separately from those with ledgers.
    • All spreadsheets have columns for periods and rows for nominal codes or nominal code/account.
  2. Upload tab:
    • After entering, pasting or linking data into the downloaded file, one or more cells (as selected) are uploaded to Dream using Dream's external DLL.
    • Budgets are posted on the basis of delete and post rather than check and add/subtract, so that each budget posting is represented by a single journal.
    • Budget contra postings can be made more flexibly than when posting using the Dream program itself.
